The furnace was most likely used for the manufacturing of ceramic objects.

  • Electric heating is any process in which electrical energy is converted to heat. Common applications include heating of buildings, cooking, and industrial processes.

Chauffeur

Chauffeur

Chauffeur

A chauffeur is a person employed to drive a passenger motor vehicle, especially a luxury vehicle such as a large sedan or limousine.

Originally such drivers were always personal servants of the vehicle owner, but now in many cases specialist chauffeur service companies, or individual drivers provide both driver and vehicle for hire, although there are service companies that just provide the driver.

The term "chauffeur" comes from the French term for stoker because the earliest automobiles, like their railroad and sea vessel counterparts, were steam-powered and required the driver to stoke the engine. Early petrol/gasoline-powered motor cars, before the advent of electric ignition, were ignited by 'hot tubes' in the cylinder head which had to be pre-heated before the engine would start. Hence the term 'chauffeur' which, in this context, means something like 'heater-upper'. The chauffeur would prime the hot tubes at the start of a journey, after which the natural compression cycle of the engine would keep them at the correct temperature.

Domestic appliance hire statistics from the Preston electricity showrooms on Lune st. Every picture tells a story. Back boilers, the coal range and gas reigned supreme for water heating until the mid 30's until the introduction of the electric immersion heater. People were still wary of mixing water and electricity until the 60's. The public information campaigns of the post war period advanced the health benefits of the weekly bath.

ENERGY EFFICIENT ELECTRIC HEATER : ENERSOL POOL HEATER : COMMERCIAL OUTDOOR PATIO HEATER.

Energy Efficient Electric Heater

energy efficient electric heater

    energy efficient
  • (Energy efficiency) ways and technology that can reduce the amount of electricity or fuel used to do the same work. Such as keeping a house warm using less energy.

  • (Energy efficiency (physics)) Energy conversion efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of an energy conversion machine and the input, in energy terms. The useful output may be electric power, mechanical work, or heat.

  • (Energy efficiency) One way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By cutting down on the energy our society needs to grow and develop, we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

    flat panel
  • Flat panel displays (usually called Flatscreen) encompass a growing number of technologies enabling video displays that are much lighter and thinner than traditional television and video displays that use cathode ray tubes, and are usually less than 100 mm (4 inches) thick.

  • A sensitive device that detects x-rays. The image produced is digital and can be immediately processed electronically. Image production requires less energy than port films. May be used to position patients and/or detect organ motion.

  • (LCD or plasma): Modern advances have brought flat panels to TV that use active matrix LCD or plasma display technology. Flat panel LCDs and plasma displays are as little as one inch thick and can be hung on a wall like a picture or put over a pedestal.

Bathroom math

Bathroom math

I have kind of an odd fascination with bathrooms and light switches when I travel. I think it has something to do with all the training I've had in usability and HCI, because I don't remember being interested in these things before I started grad school. I'm always amazed at the seemingly infinite possibilites for everyday things like turning on the shower, or figuring out which lightswitch controls which lights.

This is the shower controls from the hotel room I had for my first night in Florence. The two lower knobs were for hot and cold water. The big black one acted like a water heater thermostat. That knob dictated how hot the hot water could get. I didn't trust my fluency in celsius enough to ensure I wouldn't melt my skin off, so I had to do some math before I could take a shower.

The a/c and hot water heater are working! Turns out MLGW didn't fully restore my power after the outage, leaving some of my appliances inoperable. MLGW fixed the issue yesterday, and now I'm just waiting for the house to restore to its normal frigid temperature. Nearly 80 degrees is still hot, though...
